The 2024 Celtics dominated their competition and put together the most impressive resume of the modern basketball era. In the regular season the Celtics finished 64-18, 14 games clear of the rest of the East. They had more 30-point leads (17) than 10-point deficits (16), and 10 wire-to-wire victories. Their 1.22 points per possession and 122.2 offensive rating are the best marks in NBA history. The blowouts piled up at a record pace: league records for 25-point wins (17) and 30-point wins (10), plus the only three 50-point wins in a single season in NBA history. They were efficient on every surface: 37-4 at home (including a franchise-record 20-0 start), only 14 road losses, and a league-best 12-2 in back-to-backs. Their 15.22 home scoring margin ranks third in NBA history.
The playoffs somehow scaled the dominance up. They went 16-3 and never once trailed in a series, riding a 10-game playoff win streak becoming just the second team in the 16-win playoff era (since 2003) to lose only three games on the way to a title.
"What about the '96 Bulls, '17 Warriors, or the '25 Thunder?"
The Bulls own the better record, but their offense hit a wall in the Finals with two double-digit losses to the Sonics and just 86, 78, and 87 points scored in the series' final three games.
Golden State's playoff net rating is the best in playoff history, but it came off the back of KD cowardly joining a 73-win superteam. The Celtics built organically through the draft and smart trades, and still own efficiency records the Warriors never touched: the best offensive rating ever, most 25-point wins ever, most 30-point wins ever, and the only three 50-point wins in a single season ever.
Lastly, while the Thunder's regular season was historic, a +12.9 scoring margin that broke a 53-year-old record and 54 double-digit wins, the most ever, the playoffs told a different story. They lost more than double the Celtics' playoff games (7 to 3), fell behind 2-3 to Denver, and needed a full seven games to put away an Indiana team that our 2024 Celtics had swept the previous spring. Boston also beat a tougher Finals opponent in five, translating regular-season dominance into playoff dominance in a way OKC simply couldn't.
Banner 18 didn't just clinch a championship. It broke a tie with the Lakers for the most in NBA history and capped the most statistically airtight title run of the modern era. The 2024 Celtics own records the Bulls, Warriors, and Thunder don't, walked through the playoffs without ever trailing in a series, and did it without the manufactured-superteam shortcut. It's not a debate, it's the verdict. The 2024 Celtics are the best team in the modern NBA.
