A Special Serial That Turned into an Even More Special Memory

On March 16, 2026, during spring break, I was at home here in central Oklahoma with my daughters. My oldest, Sadie, has recently become a big fan of NBA Top Shot and loves watching the moments with me as I rip packs.

Just a few days earlier, on March 12, our entire family had gone to the Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Boston Celtics game, where we witnessed something special in person: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s 60-year old record for consecutive 20-point games. It was one of those unforgettable sports moments you know you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Not long after, that record-breaking play was released in the NBA Top Shot This Set, and I had pre-ordered 50 packs hoping to chase one of the scarcer parallels or maybe even an elusive special serial. With a total mint count of 1,615, the odds of pulling a special serial were incredibly slim—just 0.5% (5 out of 1,000).

Earlier in the day, I had recorded a few pack openings for my daily pack-ripping videos #okierips, mostly on the off chance that I might hit something exciting. No such luck.

Later in the afternoon, Sadie came over and asked if she could open some packs with me. As we ripped together, we started talking about how crazy it was that we were now watching video moments of something we had both just seen live in person only days before. We even joked about how, if this record stood as long as Wilt’s had, it could still be standing in 2085.

We casually worked through pack after pack, chatting and opening moments one after another. Then, on one pack, we noticed the edge of something different. I casually said, “Looks like we got a HexWave.”

But as the animation finished and the moment fully revealed itself, Sadie and I both stared at the screen.

There it was: #2.

Nothing before it. Nothing after it. Just #2. The Jersey Serial!

Instantly, the room exploded with screaming. I scrambled to turn the camera back on to capture the first true “hit” of our father daughter collecting journey.

A record-breaking moment from our hometown team….A jersey serial pull….but most importantly, a moment I got to share with my daughter, who has grown to love something that I love too.

Honestly, how could you ask for anything more?
