My NBA Top Shot journey completely changed on December 22, 2022, when I purchased a Max Strus /8000 common moment (torn parallel!) for $2. Of course, this wasn't any random serial, it was serial #305. 305 is the area code of Miami, Florida, which has become a symbol for the vibrance and excitement of the Magic City. From Rick Ross referencing "the 305" to Pitbull becoming "Mr. 305", these three digits have become well recognized across the USA. For a Miami Heat fan and South Floridian like myself, being from the 305 is a badge of honor.
When I started on Top Shot in 2021, I heard of people paying insane prices for area code serials and assumed I would never be able to obtain one. However, series 4 brought about multiple parallels of common moments (rippled, torn, vortex, explosion!), meaning there was a wave of incoming 305 serials to be hunted. I started to set LiveToken alerts for the 305 serial, providing me instant notification when a 305 serial was listed (often by someone with no idea of the serial number's significance). However, I wasn't the only one swimming in the 305 waters (Shout out to the PackRileyMafia, the Miami Heat community from back when that was a thing on NBATS), meaning I had to pounce on the LiveToken alerts immediately in hopes of having a chance to land the moment. After some unsuccessful attempts, I hit the Strus torn #305 and was head-over-heels in love with the chase. I began scouting upcoming drops to see which 305s would become available, placing offers and incessantly refreshing a 305 moment's page to see who might rip the moment. I've chatted with numerous collectors who pulled a Heat 305 serial and been overwhelmed by the kindness of many who would just gift me the 305 for free. I now maintain a detailed spreadsheet tracking the whereabouts of all Miami 305 serials (238 minted to date).
My collection now include 107 Heat 305 serials and they are absolutely the favorite moments I own. A few highlights:
Debuts: I own the 305 serial of debut moments of Tyler Herro, Dru Smith, Alonzo Mourning, Jae Crowder, Jimmy Butler, Andre Iguodala, Goran Dragic, Kelly Olynyk, Nikola Jovic, Max Strus, Kas Jackucionis, Kendrick Nunn, and Pelle Larsson.
Bam: 305 serials of Bam Adebayo's Series 2 40k mint (one of the most ferocious dunks on TS, a yam on Sabonis), Bam's ECF Series 1 rare, and Bam's For The Win rare against the Pistons (I was at the game!)
The crown jewel: My Dwyane Wade TSD 305. The Heat's GOAT. I still remember shaking when I got the notification that my offer was accepted.
My dream 305 serial? That would be the Series 1 TSD of Bam Adebayo (my favorite current Heat player). If user "CP3O" is reading this, hit me up! I have a handsome reward with your name on it.
What's the future of 305 serials (and area code serials in general) on TS? TopShot is now limiting rares to 299 or less mints and no parallels over 100, so the number of 305 serials is quite limited compared to prior. The on-site chat function has also been a game changer when finding other users who stumble upon a 305 serial. I don't really have a finger on the pulse of other city's area codes, but I know there are others collecting area code serials for their teams. I think all collections should have at least one area code serial from their favorite team. Unless your team is the Heat, in which case I'd recommend disregarding this post all together.
